linda-harrisThere have been many articles written, discussions and training sessions handled about how to manage Millennials.  What is a Millennial, you ask.  If you were born between 1946 and 1964, you are a Baby Boomer.  If you were born between 1965 and 1981, you are a Generation X.  Millennials were born between 1982 and 2000.  This writer is a Baby Boomer.

There are many different thoughts and philosophies about ‘how to handle Millennials’.  Many managers wonder why we have to ‘handle’ Millennials differently.

A recent study by Jean Twenge showed that if we asked each of the generations the same questions when they were the same age and at the same stage of their lives, the answers were basically the same.  In other words, all generations had the same basic work values and life expectations.  This is different than many of the articles and discussions being circulated.  Many are focused on how to HANDLE Millennials?  From the information I have reviewed, I believe we should be focused on how to COMMUNICATE with Millennials.

Yes, Millennials want a meaningful work experience that is interesting and challenging.  As a Baby Boomer, that is what I wanted when I first joined the work force.  Times were different then and business expectations were different.  I have been very lucky to have a resume that I have enjoyed, found meaningful and have experienced success with both personal and career gratification.

If I have a philosophy or direction on how to communicate with Millennials, it is basically the same as when I am communicating with Generation X or Baby Boomer associates.  Most important, listen to what they are saying.  You may think they are communicating differently than you; but, they probably think you are communicating differently than them.  Be honest, open-minded and up front.  If you don’t understand Millennials, ask for their help and support so you can learn and avoid misunderstandings.   This may take extra time and effort at first; but, as with any learning experience, it just may be worth it.

Good luck and be safe,
