The word Prophet has significant historical meaning.  While there are well understood religious meanings, perhaps less understood is the meaning conferred to the leaders of various professions. Prophet comes from the Greek word  προφήτης (profétés) which means spokesperson, an advocate.   I interviewed the past chairman of the Board of Grubb and Ellis this month. He shared with me that although his aptitude testing revealed he was best suited for Real Estate, because he grew up in a Midwestern town of 250 people, he followed the suggestion of his grandmother who said, if you don’t become a minister, be the next best thing, a life insurance agent. His grandmother understood the links between the professions and community advocacy.  And as a prophet for his calling, he achieved MDRT 10 years in a row and became a general agent for The Guardian. He eventually transitioned into his real calling, Real Estate.  Each of us is called as well. Regardless of our profession, our calling does not stop with our clients.  We are also called to spread the word to those who are developing their practices in our profession and to reach out and nurture their development. Often times we can accomplish this through our association membership, and most importantly, involvement. It may not even be in your profession, but for the community.  For instance, there is an initiative to raise taxes on business owners which will have a significant impact on unemployment in our state.  Do you know what that is, and if not, why not?  A quick reflection on last month; there was a check list to get more value out how and where we place our asset accumulation opportunities.  Since No one responded, there no one won the dinner at Oscars or a number of Starbuck gift certificates.  I will leave it open for one more month.
